EEWL: Wearable Art with Ancient Stories

About

Introducing EEWL, a shop for handmade knitted scarves featuring designs inspired by Ancient Egyptian art and culture. I have a few goals for this project:

  • to celebrate Ancient Egyptian history.
  • to find a creative outlet for my knitting and design hobby.
  • to raise awareness of and funds for the Theban Mapping Project Library.

The Theban Mapping Project A.U.C. Library in Luxor, Egypt, gives locals access to books and to literacy and educational programs. I donate a percentage of the proceeds from each item I sell to the library.

  • Queen Nefertiti, also known as Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti, is probably one of the most recognizable Egyptian queens. The inspiration for this scarf is her portrait bust on display in the Neues Museum in Berlin, Germany.
  • Ra is one of three manifestations of the Ancient Egyptian sun god as he travels on his solar barque, or boat, during the day. At sunrise he takes on the form of the scarab beetle Khepri; at midday, the falcon-headed Ra; at sunset, the ram-headed Khnum.

  • The Eye of Horus, also known as the wedjat or the udjat, symbolizes protection and well-being in the Ancient Egyptian belief system.
  • Winged deities appear as a symbol of protection in Ancient Egyptian art. Among the most common goddesses are Isis, the wife of Osiris; her sister Nepthys; and Maat.
  • The Pharaoh Akhenaten ruled shortly before King Tutankhamun. He briefly imposed a new religion on Ancient Egypt during his reign: instead of worshipping their traditional pantheon, they worshipped only the Aten, or sun disk. The hieroglyphs in this design translate to 'Aten'.
  • The Ancient Egyptians saw the lotus blossom as a symbol of rebirth.
  • The Djed pillar and the Knot of Isis represent husband-and-wife deities Osiris and Isis, respectivitely. This pattern features prominently in the funerary goods of King Tutankhamun.
  • This piece pays tribute to imagery common throughout Ancient Egyptian Art: the sun, lotus blossoms, and papyrus reeds.
